The incident took place at around 2:30 pm today, Friday. According to police sources, Mohammad Habibur Rahman, secretary of the Chandgaon Police Station Committee, was arrested when he came to the police station at around 11 pm on Thursday to file a general diary (GD) regarding the loss of his mobile phone. A case of extortion was registered against him.
As the news spread, leaders and activists of the Islamic Movement gathered at the police station that night. Leaders and activists of the organization’s associate organizations, Jubo Andolan and Sramik Andolan, also took a stand in front of the police station since this morning. At one stage, the plaintiff in the case, Md. Shipon, came to the police station and said that he did not know Habibur Rahman. Then around 2:30 pm, the police released Habibur in his custody. In the case of Chandgaon Police Station, the plaintiff filed a complaint last Wednesday, mentioning the names of 17 people. Habibur Rahman’s name was at number 5 in it.
Assistant Commissioner of Panchlaish Zone of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Md. Arif Hossain said, “The video on the basis of which the case was filed, Habibur Rahman’s face was not visible. The plaintiff also came to the police station and said that he did not know Habib. That is why he was released in the plaintiff’s custody.”
Today, around 12 noon, it was seen on the spot that the leaders and activists of the Islamic Movement were standing outside the main building of Chandgaon Police Station and chanting slogans. They opposed sending Habibur Rahman to court. They claimed that he was arrested without proper evidence. Some of the leaders and activists standing outside said that in April last year, the leaders of the Islamic Movement held a rally against extortion in the area at the head of Kaptai Road. After that, the extortion incidents stopped. Angered by this, a party involved in extortion filed a case against Habibur Rahman. They claim that the plaintiff in the case is also involved in extortion.
The plaintiff and two witnesses in the case came to the police station at around 1 pm. They did not comment when journalists tried to speak to them.
